ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Mrs. Shauna Chase « Teacher Connection / Documents / Calendar

Greetings! We are the "Chase's Creative Creatures"!

I am excited for a new school year with you. I hope you are ready!

Orientation is on Tuesday, August 7 anytime between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm or 4:00 - 6:00 pm. You may bring any school supplies you have and purchase your agenda at that time as well.

I look forward to meeting you!

On this page, you will find the most recent news for our classroom from standards being taught to important dates.

ELA Standards

Reading - We will begin with fiction learning how to ask and answer questions within our reading. We will answer who, what, when, where, why, and how after reading a text. We will focus on characters, setting, and plot. How do we define and describe characters? Where and when does a story take place? Plot is everything from beginning to middle to end. We need to focus on how characters change throughout a story.

We will work within Unit 1 Week 1.

Spelling - short vowels a and i

Grammar - sentences and fragments - A complete sentence has a subject (the naming part) and a predicate (the action part).

Vocabulary Strategy - Synonyms - These are words that mean about the same as another word: cold = chilly, frigid

Math Standards

We will begin with addition and subtraction within 1,000.

Identifying patterns, using place value to understand rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using different strategies, and solve two-step word problems

We will have mid-unit check assessments and end of unit assessments. These assessments are given as we reach these targets. We may test on a Tuesday if that is when we complete a unit.

There will be a math facts timed test each Friday throughout the year. One Friday will be timed for 1 1/2 minutes (25 problems). The following Friday it will be timed for 1 minute (25 problems). We will begin with adding 4s, 5s, and 6s.

I will incorportate Xtra Math into the classroom. Students are diagnostically tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. These asssessments are timed and are practiced on the computer for reinforcement.

These facts need to be reinforced through continuous practice. I have flash cards the students can use in the classroom. Family Dollar and Dollar Tree also have them for $1.00 in addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

Social Studies Standards

We will begin with Citizenship - "I know how to be a good citizen".

How can I participate at home, in school, in our community? How can I be a good helper and make good deeds? How can I problem solve and cooperate? How can I take action for a good cause?
