I am the RtI Specialist here at The Villages Charter Middle School, for the Middleton campus! I work with 6th - 8th grade students who have been referred to the RtI program. RtI means, Response to Intervention, which falls under the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. The RtI model has three tiers for students. The Tier 1 would be ALL students within the school. Instruction and supports are provided to all students at this tier, aligning to state standards. Tier 2 includes supplemental instruction to some students for whom Tier 1 instruction was insufficient for. Tier 3 would be the most intense tier with targeted instruction provided to even fewer students, for whom Tier 2 wasn’t quite enough. Students are placed within the RtI program based on their individual data.
At the Tier 3 level I do meet with students to help close their gaps in knowledge. I meet with students either individually or within a small group of no more than 3. We focus on bridging their gaps so they can be as successful as possible within their classrooms. Also at the Tier 3 level we meet as a team, each quarter, to discuss progress towards goals. The student’s administrator, counselor, parent and myself all meet to determine what steps will be taken to move forward.
